Functional Strength Training for BJJ, Judo and Wrestling

Functional Strength for Grappling:

Want crushing power of a Grizzly Bear whilst Grappling?

Well look no further....

In this video we look at some methods to help increase your functional strength through Isometric training. So what is Isometric training and why is it good for my Jiu Jitsu or Wrestling?

Well, 'Isometrics' are a type of strength training in which the joint angle and muscle length do not change during contraction. Now due to the very nature of Grappling, Isometric training can compliment your BJJ training bringing an increase in your performance levels. For example: Pinning and controlling people, squeezing submissions such as Rear Naked Chokes, Guillotines etc and gripping the Gi on the sleeves and collars all require high levels of Isometric strength. Therefore, Isometric training can have great transferable benefits to your BJJ, JUDO and Wrestling.

MatMaster - Grappling arts simplified for martial artists, coaches and fighters.

Hi there,

My name is James and I have been training martial arts for the past 30 years. I am a retired Mixed Martial Arts competitor, with a 7-2 professional record during which time I won the UKMMAC World middle weight title.

I have studied numerous systems and styles including: Muay Thai Kickboxing, JKD, Savate, Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Phil Normans Ghost Elusive Combat, Shooto and Erik Paulson's CSW system. Over this time I have developed a passion for the grappling arts. I love nothing more than a roll on the mat and coaching my students to help improve their skills.

I understand all too well the frustrations beginners experience when first starting out on their grappling journey. Therefore I have set up this channel to help the beginner/intermediate student to make sense of all this Wrestling stuff! The videos on this channel will arm you with the fundamental frameworks and universal concepts that will help you to become a more effective grappler in a shorter period of time.

I hope you enjoy my work,

MatMaster James
